Iowa City
This morning I’m thinking a lot about Iowa City, and the floods. When I went to school there, I both loved and hated that river. I lived in Hillcrest Hall my first year, which wasn’t too far from where I had most of my classes, the English Philosophy Building (EPB). But I still had to cross the river to get there, and in winter that was brutal. The river would be frozen hard into strange whorls, looking sort of like black and white photographs of accelerated particles (or is that protons? Man, my knowledge of science sucks). The temperature, which was already bone-chilling, would drop at least ten degrees the moment I stepped onto the bridge, and the five-minute crossing was hellish.
But in the summer, the river and the bridge over it was a good site for seeing rainbows. Iowa City is excellent for rainbows. I saw more there than I have in any other location, except Guadeloupe.

This is of the university’s Memorial Union which, when I lived on the east side of the river, I used to cut through to get to EPB because IC is always a) very cold or b) very hot, and I could get a break from either temperature in the Union, while picking up a hot or iced coffee to fortify me the rest of the way.
I miss Iowa City. I hope for the best for it and its citizens.
