Pancakes, etc.
I have developed a hatred of eggs. Vile, yellowy, rubbery ick. But a girl needs her protein. A girl needs her omega-3s. So I found a solution: eat things that have eggs in them. Cake! Cookies! Pannnnncakes. Yes, pancakes are the answer.
This morning I sloshed through the rain to meet Case and Namwali for brunch—and pancakes.
So am I just writing a blog about pancakes? Yeah, pretty much. I also went to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (finally. I only lived in the Boston area for six years without seeing it) with Olga. Otherwise, it was a gray, sleepy day.
So I’ll take a moment to write a little bit about Book Expo of America. Well, I did do that already, and people (the few, the proud) who subscribe to this blog actually got to read that entry before I deleted it. Yes, as previously mentioned, I delete things.
BEA was awesome. I got lots of free books. Now, I would have been happy to pay for them. The really exciting thing was getting the books early. Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book, due out in September? Mine! Ysabeau Wilce’s Flora’s Dare, due the same month? Mine! Marilynn Robinson’s Home, due I don’t remember when? Mine, too! And many other advance reader copies: mine, all mine!
Probably the most exciting thing was speaking at the American Booksellers for Children Luncheon and meeting the people there. Independent booksellers are sweet, intelligent, and very observant. One of my favorite things about the luncheon, and BEA in general, was that I got to see many of these booksellers over the following few days. We talked about books we love, they gave me advice on winning a silent auction, and some of them shared impressive talents (one woman repaired her own shoe!).
I met a couple authors whose books I adore. But the less said about that, the better, or I shall gush and embarrass myself.
What else? I had a relaxing time just sitting and talking in a booth with the FSG people. I signed books, which was weird, wonderful, and surreal. I did a podcast interview, which made me trembly-anxious. I went to a dessert party, which was yummy.
Now I’m back to real life. That means grading, planning my sister’s bachelorette party, dealing with my health insurance (argh!), editing the latest draft of my second novel…
and hearing JK Rowling speak tomorrow!
