This Year’s Tree
Not much to report, except I’m reading and loving this year’s Best American Short Stories collection, and particularly like Steve Almond’s “Donkey Greedy, Donkey Gets Punched,” Marlin Barton’s “Into Silence,” Danielle Evans’s “Someone Ought to Tell Her There’s Nowhere to Go,” Lauren Groff’s “Delicate, Edible Birds” (I had a dream about that one, and it wasn’t nice!), and Rebecca Makkai’s “Painted Ocean, Painted Ship.” I’m only on the Ms, though. Still more to come!
Sad news: my son’s nursery school is closing. Of course this is personally disheartening, but I also think it is so on a public scale. Property values are so high in Greenwich Village (we lived in very subsidized faculty housing) that businesses that really serve the community are being priced out. I can’t imagine what might take the place of Eliot’s school—another restaurant, maybe, or homes for the very wealthy, or a Gap. It’s our hope that we can convince Children’s Aid Society to sell their buildings to somebody else who wants to continue running a school for the Village. If you’re sympathetic to this cause, please consider signing a petition.
I’m very proud of our Christmas tree this year, and more so (of course!) of my son, Eliot. Here are a couple of photos from our family album. Whatever you celebrate, I wish you much happiness for the season and New Year.

Yay! Love the pics!
(And sorry to hear about the school
)
Thanks, Kristin!
I can’t blame the school for closing; they’re doing it so they can take the money from the building sale and help children in areas of the city with greater need. But I do fervently hope the board of directors will sell the property to someone who wants to purchase it AS a school, and keep it running.
