Build Your Own World! Assemble Your Own Real Live Boyfriend!

Some things to share:

First, this amazing blog post by Patricia Wrede, which, if you are a fantasy writer forming a new world, can be used to interview yourself, and help set your parameters. Thanks to Robin Wasserman for the link!

Also, a friend recently loaned me the ARC of E.Lockhart’s upcoming book, Real Live Boyfriends. It is so much fun. If you’ve not yet read the Ruby Oliver books, start out with the first, The Boyfriend List. Make a batch of chocolate chip cookies, stay in all night, read. I won’t say anything more, for fear of spoilers, but I assure you they’re funny, witty, and sweet. I really wish I could go back in time and give myself these books when I was in high school. They would have saved me a lot of angst.

In one of the books, Ruby (who is a lover of footnotes and movies, and enjoys making lists of films that feature certain tropes) mentions a few famous confessions of love, like one of my favorites, from when Harry Met Sally:

She also mentions Jerry Maguire’s “You complete me.” For the first time (I haven’t seen that movie in ages), it struck me what an arrogant thing that is to say. As if Dorothy’s sole value to Jerry M. is the fact that she supplies his missing pieces. Ugh. Please, give me Harry Burns any day.
