Florence + the Machine

The first time I listened to Florence + the Machine’s album Lungs, it was February of last year, there was a blizzard, and I was leaping through snowdrifts to the harp and drums of “The Dog Days Are Over.” I instantly fell in love. Seeing as I recently heard “Dog Days” in a J. Crew store, I assume I don’t need to spread the good word of Florence. But I do want to describe seeing her perform last night at Terminal 5 (NYC).

She opened with “Cosmic Love,” and it gave me chills. I always adored her voice when listening to the album, but what you might not realize until you hear her voice live is that it could raise the dead. It’s almost unnervingly powerful and beautiful. She was wearing some crazy get-up, a pale pink leotard with a flimsy cape, and a crown, and seemed like a mix of a fairy princess, superhero, and druid priestess about to cut a goat’s throat. She performed in the same way Bjork performs, like there’s nothing else in the world she would rather do, ever, than sing for strangers. She danced, she played air-harp, clearly relished her costume, and really got into pounding on a drum. At some point, during “Drumming Song,” I realized that if she lived in the Renaissance, she would have been burned as a witch (I mean that in a good way).

Good for you, and good advice.

I love Florence + the Machine—became familiar with “Cosmic Love” from a So You Think You Can Dance routine, actually!

Kristin: That was a lovely routine! And since seeing F + the M in concert, I haven’t been able to stop replaying “Cosmic Love,” so I was glad to listen to it one more time.

Noelle: Thanks! Yes, the series will continue with a third book. It is also the final one. It’s called The Jewel of the Kalderash and it will be out in August 2011. I hope to be able to share the cover of it soon!
