Sunday

This morning Thomas and I met Pascaline and Kudzai for brunch at the Cornelia Street Cafe, where we reminisced about how they used to live across the street from us, and sometimes when we’d walk to the grocery store, we might see Pascaline or Kudzai waving from their apartment window. We discussed, among other things, the election in Zimbabwe (get thee gone, Mugabe!). I learned how to pronounce Morgan Tsvangirai’s last name properly. After a walk through the West Village and Chelsea, Thomas and I arrived at the climbing wall. Ji introduced me to the beauty of red pears, Lisa was enthusiastic, they both said I climb like a girl, I discovered that I have a pretty long wingspan, and I climbed a 12a route. Ok, I did it in fits and starts, taking beta hand over fist from Ji and Steve, and I cheated once. But hey—I finished it. On the way home, I discovered that the Manhattan Fruit Exchange in Chelsea market not only had Ji’s promised red pears, but also fresh curry leaf! I bought tons of stuff and am already fantasizing about cooking moong dal—and doing it right this time!—with fried okra. Oh, yeah. Indian food and catching up with Friday’s episode of Battlestar Galatica is on the menu tonight!
