Sweet Things for the New Year

I love the Jewish tradition of having sweet things to celebrate the New Year (e.g., apples with honey for Rosh Hashanah), so let me share some sweet news with you.

Firstly, Publishers Weekly profiled me and Cabinet for their “Fall Flying Starts.” Twice a year (once for the spring books, and once for the fall), PW takes note of a few debut authors whose books are off to a flying start, and I’m thrilled to be one of them. Huzzah! Here’s the article. Even more awesome than been deemed a flying start (and when do I get wings? When do I get to fly? Because planes frighten me and I’d like a new mode of transportation) is the company I’m keeping. Kristin Cashore, author of Graceling, and Donna Freitas, author of The Possibilities of Sainthood, also get a set of wings. Their books are two of my very favorites for 2008.

Secondly, Cabinet is a finalist for a Cybils Award in the category of Middle Grade Fantasy & Science Fiction. Again, huzzah! Here are all the finalists. I’m such a huge fan of my competition that I won’t mind in the slightest if Cabinet doesn’t get the big win. Thanks, dear panelists!

Lastly, I’m part of an event taking place this Tuesday night at 6:00 in New York City. Here are the details. Come one, come all!

Do forgive any weird typos in this entry. I have in my possession one newborn and no (count them, no) nights of good sleep for a month and a half. How do people with babies not go crazy?! Also, my little family has recently moved house—just across the street. We love our new place, but packing and unpacking and arranging and all that moving stuff, on top of baby care, is exhausting. Wait a second. How did this entry turn into a complaint? I didn’t mean for that to happen! There is too much good news to complain.

Congratulations! I was one of the panel that picked Cabinet—we loved it! And are waiting eagerly for the next one…

Congrats on new baby too—it is such change in life that it is impossible to understand unless you have one.

Marie

Marcie: grad school doesn’t last forever—- unless you let it ;)

Charlotte: thank you! I feel truly honored. Vive les Cybils!

Greetings! I wanted to wish you and your family a Happy New Year and congratulations on all the wonderful news that’s happened, most importantly your baby (:

I just (literally) finished reading “The Cabinet of Wonders” and just had to find out more, especially when the next book is coming out. August seems sooo far away, haha!

Great job on this excellent story and can’t wait for more of your works. Thank you for a wonderful read (:

Marie

Hi kristine! Thanks so much! Honestly, I can’t wait for the next book to come out either. It should be out august 5th, I think. As for more information about the sequel, I’ll post a brief summary and first chapter as soon as the very last edits are done and my editor says it’s ok.

Happy new year!

sarah

Slawa

Hello,
We have found your book at the “Half price books ” store in Indianapolis sometime before Christmas. I was there with my 2 sons and a husband looking for good finds. As soon as I saw your book I thought it was going to be extaordinary. I showed it to my son Max- 8 year old who loves to read and we read the introduction at the store. The book “swallowed” us and we returned home with a GOOD READ.
My son had not put the book down till he was finished. He talked and talked about it and it seems your writting opened up the door to his imagination. Max wanted me to do a little research about you and as he noticed the book was numbered 1 so he hoped there will be maybe 2 and 3. I am going to read your book next since I have to run the house and have a little bit of time between midnight and 1 am to do my book discoveries.
If you feel like you can write my son a few words where you took your inspiration from that would be great.
I come from Poland and something weird pop up in my head whenever I say the name of your book or mention Kron’s clock. and I do not know what it is. I guess I may be slightly crazy. But who isn’t ?
Sincerely,
Slawa Bruder

Marie

Hi Slawa,

Thanks so much for your comment! I’m so glad to know that Max liked The Cabinet of Wonders. Yes, there will be books 2 and 3. Book 2 is called The Celestial Globe, and it’s already written and edited. I just have to wait for it to be published.

If you come from Poland, perhaps Max might like to read The Trumpeter of Krakow? I haven’t read that book since I was a kid, but I remember enjoying it very much, and maybe Max would be interested in reading something connected to his ethnic heritage.

Hi Marie. I just finished your book The Cabinet of Wonders. Both my mom and I enjoyed it. If I you asked me who my favorite character was it would be Astrophil. I’m also a book worm, I mean spider :) My mom says congratulations on the baby, and I’m looking forward to reading the new book.

Marie

Hey Weylund—
Thanks for your email! I’m so glad you liked the book, and congratulations on being a book spider! It’s a good thing to be.

(also, you have an awesome name).

Marie,

Send me an email, as I don’t have your non-Harvard affiliated address. Congrats on the book. In fact, I just ordered it so you could enjoy the 25 cent royalties. Perhaps I’ll make my grad students read it this spring. What’s this about a baby..?

Best,

Dustin

Marie

Hey Dustin—
Will do.
